Review: Seedless Vol. 1
Newsarama Blogs &bull Sep 2, 2010It was a picture featuring a bunch of little grape warriors, each with a Smurf-like adjective name, distinguishing characteristic and weapons or powers. He also drew mecha-battle suits for the characters, called "Robo-stomps," and made up a bunch of video game-like special moves and special weapons for them. If you look at that picture and think, "Wow, not bad for a 12-year-old," then you and I think alike. If you think you see a little Japanese influence in the art, then I think you're right-it does resemble modern pop Japanese art, as filtered through Nintendo video game design, doesn't… Full Story »

The State of DC Comics: A Company in Transition
Comics Alliance &bull Sep 2, 2010
When DC Comics reorganized their upper management last year, things got very interesting. Diane Nelson replaced longtime DC Head Honcho Paul Levitz, Jim Lee and Dan Didio became co-publishers, and Geoff Johns was promoted to Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment. This is an interesting arrangement for a notoriously conservative comics publisher, in part because it was the first huge shake-up at the company in years. Dan Didio and Jim Lee recently partook in a three-part State of the Union interview (one, two, three) with business-oriented site ICv2. They discussed DC's recent history, their roles within the company, and how… Full Story »

From the stack: A Drunken Dream and Other Stories
Precocious Curmudgeon &bull Sep 2, 2010
A Drunken Dream and Other Stories, the Fantagraphics collection of short stories from across Moto Hagio's career, is one of those books that spoils you. It's so lovingly conceived and beautifully produced, and the material it contains is so strong that it's hard not to envision who might be next to receive this generous treatment. Hagio, one of the founders of modern shojo manga and great contemporary manga in general, certainly deserves as much of… Full Story »

Please, Just Kiss Digital Comics On The Mouth Already
Comics Alliance &bull Sep 1, 2010
When 2010 comes to a close, there's no question what the biggest comics news story of the year will be: digital comics. It's the only story that stands a good chance of affecting every publisher; no matter who you are or what you publish from superheroes to manga to art comix, the iPad and the pending flood of affordable tablet computers will let you sell all of it to a brand new audience. This may be the most important, genuinely new and viable development in comics since the advent of the Direct Market, and at the barest minimum, it has… Full Story »

The Seinen Alphabet: G
Precocious Curmudgeon &bull Sep 1, 2010
Let's start with Gantz (Dark Horse), written and illustrated by Hiroya Oku and originally serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump. It's about a mysterious super-computer that plucks random people from the moment of their imminent deaths and forces them to weapon up and try and kill aliens. It's packed with gratuitous violence and nudity, which makes it the platonic ideal of one definition of seinen. You can't… Full Story »
