  3. Comic Studies: Dave Sim and Seth

    CBR News &bull Dec 13, 2011

The University of Dundee in Scotland recently launched the world's first mainstream postgraduate degree course (an MLitt) in Comic Studies. In this weekly column, I cover the course from a student's perspective, looking at and discussing what the term "Comic Studies" really entails. It's the final week of class for the Autobiographix module, and for the first semester of Comic Studies as a whole. My essay has been submitted, and I can attempt to put the pain of endless citations behind me while looking forward to International Comic Cultures and Creating Comics after Christmas! First though, a look at our… Full Story »

Panel Nine, a new digital comics imprint set up by Honk Kong-based iEnglish.com run by a longtime British comics supporter, has just released a superb iPad edition of Dapper John, one of Eddie Campbell's earliest comic strips. It's a fabulous package collecting all of the "Ace Club" stories in one place and adding a whole bunch of extras. When Alan Moore first saw Eddie Campbell's In the Days of the Ace Rock 'n' Roll Club in 1982, he wrote, "Eddie Campbell is, in my opinion, one of the most interesting talents, amateur or professional, working in comics at the moment."… Full Story »

    CBR Reader Reviews &bull Dec 10, 2011

This comic is pretty messed up. People might sell it as dark, but the truth of the matter is this book is messed up, it's strange, it's beyond macabre and reaches into the lands of the almost-perverted. Our hero is down for the count and it's up to his family to share the spotlight and the load. Jeff Lemire… Full Story »

    downthetubes.net news &bull Dec 6, 2011

An exclusive "selling exhibition" of art from Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen saga opens later this month in various continental locations. In close collaboration with Alan Moore, acclaimed writer of Watchmen, From Hell and V for Vendetta, Kevin O'Neill visualises an alternative history in which a team of famous fictional characters live real lives and tackle terrifying threats to humanity. Rich with literary and artistic allusions, O'Neill's meticulous pages conjure up a fantastical parallel London from fog-shrouded Victorian mysteries to 1960s psychedelia and 70s punk. This exclusive selling exhibition at Galerie Champaka, Brussels and Galerie 9eme… Full Story »

  15. Shelf Life - Leftovers

    CBR Columnns &bull Dec 1, 2011

Everybody has leftovers after Thanksgiving. Some turkey, some mashed potatoes, some stuffing, probably some turnips in the back of the refrigerator that nobody wants to eat. Today's column is full of leftovers -- or maybe it's a bunch of appetizers: thoughts that don't warrant a whole column, but have been bouncing around in my head anyway. I've come to enjoy reading collections much more than single issues. And I'm much more likely to buy a hardcover than a trade paperback. So, yes, I guess I've turned into a trade-waiter. There was some first-hand evidence that the CrossGen offices were haunted.… Full Story »
