Pop! - "Star Wars Art: Comics"
CBR Columnns &bull Dec 9, 2011
I'm going back to the start (again): "Star Wars." In a sentimental way, this franchise haunts all of us, as the mighty bond between these films and comic books are seemingly inseparable and simply irresistible. Creator George Lucas infused these films with the gusto of "Flash Gordon" and the kind of comic titles that inspired him during his youth. Paying it forward, the arrival of the first "Star Wars" comics predate the original 1977 film's premiere and ignited a generation of children with a passion for the comics art medium while triggering a financial windfall that ultimately saved Marvel Comics… Full Story »

The Buy Pile - Dirty Deeds, Done Dirt Cheap
CBR Columnns &bull Dec 8, 2011
Every week Hannibal Tabu (two-time Eisner-winning journalist/blogger/novelist/poet/jackass on Twitter/head honcho of Komplicated.com) goes to a comic book store called Comics Ink in Culver City, CA (Overland and Braddock -- hey Steve, Jason, Vince and Quislet) and grabs a whole lotta comics. These periodicals are quickly sorted (how) into two piles -- the "buy" pile (a small pile most weeks, comprised of planned purchases) and the "read" pile (often huge, often including comics that are really crappy but have some value to stay abreast of). Thursday afternoons you'll be able to get his thoughts (and they're just the opinions of one… Full Story »

Axel-In-Charge - Inside "Avengers Vs. X-Men"
CBR Columnns &bull Dec 7, 2011
This week, Marvel Comics expanded the information on its cryptic "It's Coming" teasers by a metric ton when they revealed that "It" will be a 12-part event comic titled "Avengers Vs. X-Men" and when it's coming is April of 2012. After announcing the series yesterday, the publisher today revealed more details on the plans their "Architect" writers (Brian Bendis, Jonathan Hickman, Ed Brubaker, Matt Fraction and Jason Aaron) have in a press event as they prep the book for the rotating art team of John Romita, Jr., Olivier Coipel and Adam Kubert. And as the next stop on the tour,… Full Story »

When Words Collide - No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn (Comics & Graphics Festival)
CBR Columnns &bull Dec 5, 2011
I don't know anything specific about the demographics of the CBR readership -- I'm sure Jonah Weiland's secret underground war room has huge displays full of blinking lights and graphs and dioramas showing exactly what kind of readers click on which articles and what those readers tend to eat for breakfast on Tuesdays -- but I do know this: when I write about anything outside of Marvel or DC, I don't tend to get many message board comments. It's not like my corner of the CBR message boards is hammered with posts anyway, but since that's my only reliable metric… Full Story »

Shelf Life - Leftovers
CBR Columnns &bull Dec 1, 2011
Everybody has leftovers after Thanksgiving. Some turkey, some mashed potatoes, some stuffing, probably some turnips in the back of the refrigerator that nobody wants to eat. Today's column is full of leftovers -- or maybe it's a bunch of appetizers: thoughts that don't warrant a whole column, but have been bouncing around in my head anyway. I've come to enjoy reading collections much more than single issues. And I'm much more likely to buy a hardcover than a trade paperback. So, yes, I guess I've turned into a trade-waiter. There was some first-hand evidence that the CrossGen offices were haunted.… Full Story »

When Words Collide - The New 52 First Quarter Review
CBR Columnns &bull Nov 28, 2011
Last week, I answered some reader questions, but I purposely ignored a big one: "Three months in, what do you think of DC's new 52? Which ones are you still reading?" That was a popular question, probably since I'm no longer doing weekly reviews of new comics, and I'm not doing any kind of regular podcast anymore, so getting my thoughts on current superhero books is dependent on a close reading of my Twitter account and hanging out at my local comic shop on Wednesday afternoons. But, yes, I do have opinions on the new 52 -- particularly after thinking… Full Story »
