Kyoso Giga
AniPages Daily &bull Dec 10, 2011Toei has produced another little gem of highly stylized directing and visuals in their just-released OVA Kyoso Giga . The film is a fast-paced romp full of bright colors, highly deformed and active animation, and constantly surprising angles and layouts. The directing is in the willful and flamboyant mold that characterizes all the great Toei directors of the last two decades, of which… Full Story »

Lupin III: Bye Bye Liberty Crisis
AniPages Daily &bull Nov 13, 2011Ever since the third TV series of 1984-1985, Lupin III has lived on mostly in yearly TV specials of uneven quality that were often disappointing despite frequently ambitious staff casting. The very first TV special was Bye Bye Liberty Crisis , directed by Osamu Dezaki and aired on April 1, 1989. Dezaki went on to direct the first few TV specials before they were handed on to a succession of different directors. I just saw this film for the first time today, and I was impressed by it. I'm used to disappointment with these TV specials, but I'd easily rank… Full Story »

Telecom Lupin movie #5: The Eternal Mermaid
AniPages Daily &bull Nov 10, 2011We've gotten a new Telecom Lupin III film roughly once per decade so far, but that rule is soon to be broken. After doing the 2007 Elusive Mist TV special, Telecom is back with a new TV special next month:… Full Story »

Telecom Lupin movie #4: The Elusive Fog
AniPages Daily &bull Nov 10, 2011This film harkens back to a character from the very first Lupin series: Mamo Kyosuke, the time-traveler who has it in for Lupin for some mysterious reason. I'd like to say The Elusive Fog was a return to the standards of the early Telecom… Full Story »

Guilty Crown #4 / Idolm@ster #18
AniPages Daily &bull Nov 8, 2011Ryotaro Makihara and Akitoshi Yokoyama, two of my favorite people in the anime industry right now, both played major parts in Masaaki Yuasa's last two TV series Kaiba and Tatami Galaxy. In the absence of a Masaaki Yuasa project to work on, they haven't been idle. They both just directed a TV episode for different studios that… Full Story »

Grampa's lamp
AniPages Daily &bull Nov 7, 2011I just wrote about Telecom's very early work on Lupin. Well, they're still very active as both a subcontractor doing animation work on other people's shows and producing their own projects. Their latest was one of the other four Project… Full Story »

The anime production line
AniPages Daily &bull Oct 24, 2011I was asked to talk about the hierarchy of anime production, so here is a very basic explanation of some of the key steps in anime production. As a way of outlining the basic workflow, I'll give a brief rundown of what each of the terms that you find in anime credits entails. The terms are ordered in basic production order, from pre-production tasks to animation tasks to final assembly. I'll limit this discussion to the terms that pertain to the animation without touching on the other aspects like writing, production, art, etc., because otherwise it would take way too… Full Story »

Satoshi Murai
AniPages Daily &bull Oct 16, 2011My latest indie Japanese animator discovery is Satoshi Murai. In 2009, one year after graduating from the Graphic Design Department of Tama Art University, he animated a beautiful, dreamy music video for the song A Play by Japanese alternative electro-hop… Full Story »

Licca-chan & Burabura
AniPages Daily &bull Oct 1, 2011Ajia-Do, the studio founded by ex- A Pro animators Shibayama Tsutomu and Osamu Kobayashi in 1978, produced an interesting series in the early 90s based on toy maker Takara's Licca-chan doll. Licca-chan , despite being presumably aimed at little girls, was a quality production with a unique style of low-key, imaginative fantasy that I found very appealing for being so different in nature from all other anime out there. I looked back on it recently and still found that there's still a lot to appreciate in the series. Beyond its conventional blandly cute anime style character designs, and despite its… Full Story »
